This year Wicklow Gaol has created a magical Victorian world of wonder with Christmas Markets.. No period in history has influenced the way in which we celebrate Christmas, quite as much as the Victorians.   This was the time when the Christmas tree and the Christmas card became popular; when the Christmas cracker was invented and when the joy of giving Christmas gifts took off.  This was when Charles Dickens wrote one the most famous Christmas tales ever – A Christmas Carol. So come and enjoy Wicklow and let us treat you to free mince pies and cream in  front of  our open coal fire in our cosy sitting room.

Victorian Wicklow wins RTE Christmas Towns’ competition

RTE has announced Wicklow Town as the Winner of The Business Christmas towns’ competition in the medium towns’ category.

Judges selected the Victorian initiative led by Wicklow’s Historic Gaol and supported by businesses and organisations in Wicklow Town as the hands down winner in the category
